Genre Challenge--You in?

Confession: I've never read any steampunk. Nothing. Notta. No short story, novella, novel, zip zilch. And I think that's sad.

What about you?

Maybe you've read (or heck, even written) steampunk (Matt), but you've never read fantasy, YA, or romance.

Well, here's my challenge to you:

In the next week, read a genre that you've never read before and then come back here and blog about it. It doesn't have to be a whole novel, a short story will do. The point is to broaden your literary tastes. See what else is out there.

Who knows, you might fall in love with reading all over again.

So, I ask you again: Are you in?

I'm reading memoir right now, but I've read several memoirs in the past so I don't think that counts. I also just won a romance novel- I haven't read that genre in a million years. So you might hear back from me- depends on how fast I can read or if I get distracted by some other historical fiction!

Count me in! I can't think of a genre I haven't read. Umm...Oh, I know. I hate reading classics. I know, please don't hurt me. I've never read Pride and Prejudice, so I'll try to read that one. It will be a miracle if I pull it off, but I'm up for the try. :-)

Yay, participants!

Steph: You don't have to read it all, even a chapter or two would be cool. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Shannon: I'll hide my shock in you haven't reading P&P yet. I LOVE Austen, and just yesterday I was replaying the novel in my head while doing the dishes. It's not a quick read (and takes a while to get into it), but IMO it's worth it!

I think I've read at least one of everything that exists in the bookstore. This is going to be interesting.

And I guarantee that you've probably read some Steampunk without knowing you read Steampunk (Pullman's The Golden Compass comes immediately to mind).

I've probably read or listened to everything but a bodice-ripper, and I'm not sure I can do that (I did listen to a JD Robb -- i.e., Nora Roberts -- book recently. Better than I expected).

Matt, I watched Golden Compass, but I never read it, so that doesn't count for me. Any ideas where I should start?

Oh Bane, now you should totally read a bodice ripper, or even just a Harlequin. The old school ones are hilarious!

Let's see. You could read, in no particular order, The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling, Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, Soulless OR Changeless by Gail Carriger, or Perdido Street Station by China Mieville.

There's also a host of other Steampunk books out there, but those are the best I can think of right now.

Sweet, thanks. I'll go see what I can find.
